Freedom - The Struggle Continues 20th Annual Citywide Observance of the Birthday of Dr Martin Luther King, Jr

On January 15, 2005, Mayor Anthony A. Williams and the DC Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Commission will host the District's 20th annual citywide observance of the King Holiday by remembering the life, legacy, and birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Civil Rights activists Elaine R. Jones, Esq., former president of the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, and Rev. Walter E. Fauntroy, pastor of New Bethel Baptist Church, are the featured speakers for this event. This year's celebration will focus on the District of Columbia's struggle for self-determination and voting representation in Congress.

Two Living the Dream Awards will be presented by Mayor Williams. The 2005 honorees are the Honorable Eleanor Holmes Norton and the Phyllis Wheatley YWCA. Mayor Williams and the Commission are proud to present this year's program, which will kick off a weekend of celebrations. Among those celebrations is a day-long opportunity to engage in service projects on January 17.
