Celebrate DC Emancipation Day

View a list of events at www.dc.gov/emancipationday.

Mayor Fenty and the Lincoln Bicentennial Commission invite you to a free concert at the Lincoln Memorial on Easter Sunday, April 12 at 3 pm.  The concert marks the 70th Anniversary of Marian Anderson’s historic Easter Sunday concert on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, after she had been denied the opportunity to sing at DAR Constitution Hall because of the color of her skin.  District native and Duke Ellington High School graduate, world-renowned mezzo-soprano Denyce Graves will pay tribute to Anderson, along with the US Marine Band, and the Chicago Children's Choir.  In addition, the DC Emancipation Day Fund is supporting the participation of DC-based a cappella group Sweet Honey in the Rock, whose songs remind us that DC is not yet free.  The concert is part of DC’s Emancipation Day celebration and the Lincoln Memorial Rededication Series.
